Benson Wairegi – Britam


Dr. Benson I Wairegi is the current Group Managing Director of Britam Holdings Public liability company (Britam). Britam is a financial services conglomerate headquartered in Nairobi Kenya. Britam has subsidiaries in Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique.

Mr. Wairegi presided over the transformation of the company from a small home service insurance company, into a diversified financial services group operating in seven (7) countries, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan, Mozambique and Malawi with interests in life insurance, general insurance, health insurance, retirement planning and property.

Mr. Wairegi studied Bachelor of commerce at the University of Nairobi. He has a Master of Business Administration (MBA). He is also a certified public accountant of Kenya (CPAK).

Benson Wairegi joined Price Water House Coopers in 1977 at the age of 24 as an audit trainee. He went to join British-American as the chief account in 1980

After the 1984 regulatory change, Kenyan regulators ordered all foreign-owned insurance companies to sell at least 33.3% shareholding to Kenyan nationals as a way of ensuring that all companies has a Kenyan ownership. Mr. Benson Wairegi took out a KSh600,000 personal mortgage against his house and bought a 3.3% stake in Britam. He also encouraged other Kenyans to do the same. That same year, he was appointed as the CEO of the company. Over the years, his investment in Britam has grown to billions. Mr. Wairegi comes from the famous Rwathia village in Murang’a county that has produced billionaires such as Peter Munga, Jimna mbaru, Gerald Gikonyo, Gershom Kirima, Chris kirubi. James Mwangi of Equity also comes from the county
