- The ECG is a graphic record of the changes in electrical activity which occur within the heart muscle during each heartbeat. It is registered on a continuous strip of graph paper.
- The electrocardiogram will normally pick up abnormalities in rhythm or heart size, and also any damage to the heart muscle (myocardium).
- The test can be performed while the applicant is at rest or after he has carried out a carefully measured exercise i.e. pre and post exercises.
- Always request for the Doctor’s report.
What is detected by ECG?
- Arrhythmias – Irregularity in the rhythm of the heartbeat (Heart rate <60/min is bradycardia; >100/min is tachycardia)
- Myocardial infarction – Death of part of the heart muscle
- Peri-carditis – inflammation of the sac enclosing the heart
- Ventricular hypertrophy
- Ischemic Heart Disease
- Heart (AtrioVentricular) Block (1st, 2nd and 3rd degrees) & Bundle Branch Block – Heart failure and sudden death.
