MINISTRY OF EDUCATION
Ministry of education has the following roles in ECDE curriculum:
• Developing institutions devoted to the promotion of education in Kenya
• Securing effective cooperation of all public bodies concerned with education
• Promoting education for people of Kenya in line with the national plan for economic and social development
• Inspection and supervision of ECDE centers and training institutions
• Registration of ECDE centers and training institutions
• Training of ECDE teachers
• Development of ECDE curriculum
• Provision of policy guidelines
• Mobilization of resources for ECDE
• Coordination of partners in ECDE
• Maintains standards and quality assurance
OTHER MINISTRIES
Ministry of health
• Community mobilization on health issues to ensure children don’t miss school because of sickness
• Ensure all children are immunized to keep children healthy for maximum learning.
• Carries out advocacy
• Ensure sanitation and food safety at school and in the environment to promote health among children therefore benefit maximally from the curriculum.
• Integrated management of childhood illness.
Ministry of Gender, Culture, sports and Social Services
• Promotes traditional cultural values and practices that promote healthy growth and development of all children including those with special needs.
• Mobilizes children on matters of children e.g. child education
• Ensure all children are treated equally irrespective of gender/disability
• Links children to other service providers
• Carries out advocacy
• Supports infrastructure for ECDE
Ministry of finance (Treasury)
• Allocates funds for ECDE activities in schools
• Provides guidance in creation of alternative funding strategies
• Provides funds for support of education of children with disabilities
• Provides funds across the ministries for ECDE programs
NONGOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS
• Provide finances and learning materials
• Give technical support
• Provide educational services to children eg some NGOs have own schools
• Carry out research on issues of importance such as implementation of curriculum
• Participate in strengthening quality assurance
• Enhance capacity of ECDE teachers and special needs education teachers
• Complement government efforts in mobilizing resources
• Carrying out advocacy
INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY
• Mobilization of resources needed for curriculum implementation
• Provides funding
• Offers comparative study of curriculums for effectiveness especially during curriculum change
• Provide technical support
• Build capacities
• Build and strengthen linkages and collaboration on matters of curriculum
LOCAL COMMUNITIES
• Support parent’s efforts in providing education to children
• Safeguard children’s rights e.g. right of education
• Mobilize resources to enhance children’s holistic development and to safeguard their rights. Set the social norms that guide parents in socializing and inculcating spiritual and moral values and life principles
• Support Community Own Resource Persons and other child care service providers through employment, material and emotional support.
• Provides physical facilities in schools
• Advocates for services for young children
• Provides alternative and complimentary approaches in care, education and health and nutrition of children.
• Addresses the educational needs of the disabled and disadvantaged children within the community
FAITH BASED ORGANIZATIONS
• Sponsor children in ECDE centers
• Provide moral and spiritual guidance
• Provide early education for children
• Support capacity building for ECDE personnel and ECDE programs
• Carry out advocacy
• Mobilize resources
• Provide educational support to children with special needs e.g. disabled, orphans etc.
INTERESTED PARTNERS
Interested partners include the private sector that has invested in education, publishers of various resource materials. These are the individuals or organizations that have interest in or are affected by implementation of curriculum.
