Former Manchester United forward Memphis Depay would be very motivated to return to Old Trafford and prove he is good enough, according to former united player Louis Saha.
The 26-year-old Dutch midfielder failed to live up to his grand billing during a frustrating 18 months at the theatre of dreams following a £26million arrival from PSV Eindhoven. Depay made just one start under the special 1 Jose Mourinho before his anticipated move to Lyon in January 2017.
Despite underwhelming during his Premier League spell Manchester United were keen to cover themselves after Depay’s exit and included a buy-back clause as part of the £16m deal which saw him move to Olympic Lyon
Memphis has taken his game to a new level playing in Ligue 1, scoring 54 goals in 138 appearances for his new side, as well as playing a key role in their journey to the Champions League semi-finals this season.
The Lyon forward is an attractive option in the summer transfer window if Manchester United fail to agree a deal for their dream summer transfer Jadon Sancho, and Saha believes Depay would relish the chance to prove himself again in the Premier League.
“I wasn’t a fan of Memphis Depay when he was originally at the club because I don’t think he was mentally ready, but he has improved dramatically and proved to be a major force in Ligue 1,” Saha told the Football Index Podcast.
“Depay has really matured and has become a leader in an exciting Lyon team. He has always had the quality to play at the top level and I think he would be very motivated to return to Old Trafford and prove he is good enough.”
