Why Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have Improved

Martial and Rashford are enjoying career best seasons for Man United and have been helped by their manager in training.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has detailed the pointers he gives Martial and Rashford on their finishing in training sessions.

Martial Rashford have both scored 22 goals in career-best seasons and netted nine of United’s 19 goals since the Premier League season restarted.

Ole settled on Martial as United’s number nine and Rashford as the left winger in pre-season after Romelu Lukaku asked to leave, and in recent weeks the duo have formed a lethal trident with Mason Greenwood that Ole has likened to the triumvirate of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, and Carlos Tevez.

Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford often vied for the same position under Mourinho but Ole immediately accommodated the duo in the same eleven as caretaker manager. “We work on it, we work on patterns, but they’ve been together at the club for so long now and there was a spell where they were challenging, more or less, for the same position, both of them maybe on the left-hand side.

“But now we have found a way of playing them together and you can see it’s starting to click, they enjoy each other’s company, they know each other’s strengths, they know each other’s weaknesses – if there are any – so I’m delighted with their performances”.

“When we split up I do more with the strikers than with the defenders, that’s true. I think I’ve got more expertise and input in that part of it, so whenever we do finishing I like to join in and watch them, and give them a few pointers and tips”.

“Just before every game we look at the ‘keepers, how do they normally act? What’s their stance? When do they jump? How do they set their feet? Defenders: do they dive in? So we do a  lot of work but it’s the effort by the boys. And the calmness and composure is the main thing.”
